Editorial Standards & Corrections Policy

Jersey Signal Project (JSP) is an independent, reader-supported news outlet focused on public accountability, transparency, and governance in New Jersey. Our reporting prioritizes documentary evidence, public records, and public-interest analysis.

This page explains how we report, how we correct errors, and what readers and sources can expect from our work.

Editorial Mission

Jersey Signal Project exists to:

  • Hold New Jersey public institutions accountable

  • Expand access to public records and information

  • Explain complex bureaucratic and legal processes

  • Report in the public interest, not for political or commercial advantage

We are independent of political parties, government agencies, and the entities we cover.

Editorial Standards

1. Accuracy and Sourcing

  • We strive for factual accuracy in all reporting.

  • Claims of fact are supported by:

    • Public records

    • Official correspondence

    • Court filings

    • Statutes or regulations

    • On-the-record statements

  • When documents are referenced, we publish or link to them whenever possible.

If information cannot be independently verified, that limitation is disclosed to readers.

2. Use of Documents and Public Records

Much of JSP’s reporting relies on:

  • OPRA requests

  • Government disclosures

  • Administrative filings

  • Emails and written responses from public entities

Documents are reviewed carefully and quoted accurately. Context is provided to avoid misrepresentation.

3. Fairness and Right of Response

  • Individuals or entities that are the subject of significant criticism are given an opportunity to respond when practical.

  • Responses are quoted fairly and in context.

  • Failure to respond before publication may be noted.

JSP does not guarantee pre-publication review by subjects of reporting.

4. Opinion vs. Reporting

  • Factual reporting and analysis are clearly distinguished from opinion.

  • Commentary or interpretation is labeled or written in a manner that makes its nature clear to readers.

  • Even opinion pieces are grounded in verifiable facts.

5. Independence and Conflicts of Interest

  • JSP does not accept payment, gifts, or favors from subjects of coverage.

  • Financial support from subscribers does not influence editorial decisions.

  • Any potential conflict of interest relevant to a story will be disclosed.

6. Language and Tone

  • We avoid defamatory language, exaggeration, or personal attacks.

  • Criticism is directed at actions, policies, and decisions — not personal traits.

  • Strong conclusions are supported by evidence and reasoning.

Corrections Policy

Jersey Signal Project is committed to correcting errors promptly and transparently.

What Qualifies for a Correction

Corrections are issued for:

  • Factual inaccuracies

  • Misstated dates, figures, or quotes

  • Incorrect attribution

  • Material errors that could mislead readers

Differences of opinion or interpretation do not automatically require correction.

How Corrections Are Made

  • Corrections are noted clearly within the original article.

  • The correction will explain what was changed and why.

  • When appropriate, the date of correction will be included.

We do not silently alter published reporting to remove substantive errors.

How to Request a Correction

Readers, sources, or subjects of coverage may request a correction by contacting:

Email: editor@jerseysignal.anonaddy.me
Subject line: “Correction Request – Jersey Signal Project”

Please include:

  • The article title

  • The specific information in question

  • Supporting documentation, if available

All requests are reviewed in good faith.

Updates and Clarifications

Some stories evolve as new information becomes available. In these cases:

  • Articles may be updated with new facts or documents

  • Updates will be labeled as such

  • Earlier reporting will remain accessible unless legally required to be removed

Transparency and Accountability

JSP welcomes scrutiny. Our credibility depends on:

  • Showing our work

  • Owning mistakes

  • Publishing in the open

Reader trust is more important than speed, clicks, or convenience.
